Your desktop PC take so long to start you have time to go get a cup of coffee and drink it? Tried to install the last game only to find your graphics card is six generations, too old to play? Or maybe you just want to exploit the speed and reliability of operating systems like Microsoft Windows 7 and Mac OS Lion. If any of these are true, then it's time for you to buy a new desktop PC. It can help us do that.
Prices for desktop PCs start as low as $ 200 and range all the way up to over $ 5,000, but most of us would be more than happy with a $ 600 - $ 750 boxes, including monitors. You still need to make choices when it comes to CPU, memory, hard drive capacity and graphics technology, but the good news is your money has never gone beyond. And a PC you buy today may well last for 4-6 years.
Mid-priced Desktop PCs
Sub $ 600 PC used to be the bargain basement for desktops, but are now the norm. You should be able to find a desktop that has a dual-core processor and 3-4GB of RAM for under $ 600 with an LCD monitor. The dual-core processor helps with the increasingly complex tasks that even casual users expect from their PCs. These include converting videos from one format to another (so you can view on your phone, for example), and light photo editing like red-eye removal, cropping, or recomposing the layout of a photo with the addition of missing persons or change of color in one shot.
A Pentium or AMD Athlon X2 dual-core should fit the bill, but you can quickly update a Core 2 Duo, Core i3/i5, or Athlon II X3, if you want to get tasks done more quickly. Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) and DVD burners prevail in this price range and are wise investments. Many are equipped with large capacity hard drives (250GB to 500GB). Many of these PCs are still in a minitower case, but those cases are sexier small form factor, ultra small form factor, or better still, small form factor PCs. These cases take up much less desk space of a traditional mini-tower, and are just as functional as their larger counterparts. In addition, a good value PC should easily last the next 4-6 years.
